Safer Sleep Guidance

From September 2026, early years settings must follow strengthened safer‑sleep requirements within the EYFS. These rules are based on national guidance designed to reduce risks such as SIDS and SUDC.

The EYFS requirements on safer sleep guidance and rules from September 2026, include that:

Babies under 12 months are always placed on their backs;

Cots and mats are kept free from loose bedding, toys, pillows, bumpers and comforters for children under one;

All sleep equipment must meet British Safety Standards and be checked regularly;

Rooms are kept cool (16–20°C) to prevent overheating; and

Staff must keep sleeping children within sight and hearing at all times, with babies under six months supervised in the same room.

We work with families to understand each child’s sleep habits, but we can only follow routines that meet safer‑sleep requirements. Comforters are permitted only for children over 12 months, and sleep bags must fit correctly and comply with safety standards.

Using similar safer‑sleep practices at home helps children settle more easily in the setting. Placing babies on their backs, keeping sleep spaces clear, avoiding unsafe products, and maintaining a cool room all reflect the same principles required in early years environments from September 2026.

Our setting follows these statutory expectations to ensure every child sleeps in a safe, supervised space.
